Scouting Caddo

Postby timberking on Thu Jul 08, 2010 5:07 pm

We started a job at the refuge that will alow me to do some early early scouting for bow season. I have been asking questions concerning access. For gun season, vehicle traffic is restricted to the Auto Tour which doesn't get you very close to the lake. I was told "Get a bicycle", which isn't a bad idea. I was told I would probably be able to get off the main drag for the purpose of getting a stand in or body out. They will be easy on bowhunters, won't have to apply for a weekend. As far as locating stand areas, I am looking at my aerial photos and top maps and quizzing the guys down there. You will have to take a doe before shooting a buck but the doe won't require a tag off your license. I have seen some good sheds the timber markers have found in the last couple of weeks. Anybody else planning on trying?

Yep. I do. I sent in for the draw hunts for general and special hunts for others.
I need to pull up the aerial. If you find a good spot where I can get someone in a wheelchair then I would appreciate a headsup. I am hoping we get that draw

I plan to scout during bow season for possible future general season hunts.

If you want to compare notes then I would love to meet you over there for some scouting and tactics. ;)

Darren, are you looking for the wheelchair spot for archery or gun? I am on it. We can get together and share notes. I can say, don't plan to hunt without a Thermacel.

I am looking for a place to possibly hunt 3 different folks. One definitely in a wheelchair and two that are very limited in their ability to walk. I need at least two different spots that are accessible for mobility disabled folks. I can take one during general season if we get that draw.

Also I would like to find a spot to bowhunt a couple of times for me. My October is shot this year as my company has blacked out all vacation for October and I will only get to hunt on weekends and maybe a Friday or Monday or two during bow season.

I can bowhunt in general season on my leases, so that eases my pain

The bicycle idea is a great one. One of my buddies hunts nothing but WMA's in Arkansas and he made a little trailer for his bike big enough to haul a deer in....plus gear. To prove how easy it was to pedal he got in the trailer(180 lbs) and had me pull him all over the yard!! Nice and quiet and a whole lot better than walking to get WAY in to those "good" spots!!

timberking, You might look into canoe/kayak type of access if your wanting to hunt near the lake.

I am going to ask about boating in the backside. It would be a flat bottom w/motor. I am assembling a list of questions for Jason.

Was told that boats were OK as long as you stay away from the Starr Ranch area. They are also revising the map of the roads that will be available for use, which will be a huge plus as there are solid top roads all over the place. They want us down there whacking and stacking.

Sounds great TK. It sounds like I may be more involved than originally thought. I got a phone call from the reserve today but will find out more soon.

I'm seriously thinking about setting on the front porch of the headquarters if it don't cool off a little :!:
