Andrew's Hunt

Postby darren on Mon Mar 22, 2010 2:50 pm

All the pieces are in place for Andrew's first wild boar hunt
Booyah and I will be taking Andrew and his grandmother Sarah on Andrew's first wild boar hunt this coming Friday and Saturday afternoons at an undisclosed lease south of Hallsville, Texas. According to the lease manager the boars are big and hungry and hitting the corn right before dark

Ya'll have some good thoughts and hopes for Andrew as he attempts to bag his first boar  We will be filming and photographing and if I have reception we will "broadcast a live hunt" from the blind ;)

Most of you know that Andrew is 11 and his first hunt was with us at LOP. He didn't see a deer but he was a pure joy to be around and was as excited to be there as anyone I have seen. He and Kayla discussed their favorites wrestlers during the down time

Here is the story of Andrew's Boar Hunt.

Booyah, Andrew and his grandmother Sarah met me at my home on Friday afternoon. We drove to the lease and met with the lease holder. We then all loaded into a Toyota pickup and headed to the back side of the place. We got Booyah, Sarah, and Andrew settled into a large popup stand and I manned the camera and video camera from a lean-to stand about 40 yards behind them.

It was about 5pm when we settled in. It wasn't long when I could hear several roars coming from my east. We were hunting in the corner of a clearcut. Andrew was east of the feeder area looking west and I was east of Andrew. A little later I watched a deer come out in a creek bottom and videoed it. Off and on through the afternoon I would hear feral hogs squealing and fighting and they were just plain loud but they never came into sight.

We stayed until about 30 minutes after dark in the stand hoping the hogs would show up. I think we just had a case of bad luck. The wind had been out of a mostly southerly direction but about an hour before dark the wind shifted to an easterly direction which was carrying our scent to the feeder.

Andrew and Sarah were great guests. We are planning to do this again whenever Sarah wants. If you know Andrew then you know he is ready right now

Thank you Booyah  You are great with the kids

I truly had a good time with Andrew. Look forward to doing it again with Andrew and others that want to go

I had taken Andrew taken some peanut butter and crackers so that he would have a snack if he got hungry. It was funny watching him eating theses crackers and trying to be quite. Every bite when the crackers would crunch, he would cover his mouth and chew real slow. It took him about 20 minutes to eat 4 crackers. Each time he would bite, he would look around to see if a hog could hear him. I had a video camera inside the blind and the only time I filmed him was right after we got in the pop blind. I asked him what he thought about the hunt so far and he said it was kind of scary. I asked him why it was scary and he pointed down on the groud by my foot and he said look at that hog track. And there was a hog track by foot. He didnt know that the hog tracks around the blind where there before the blind was put up. He thought the hogs had come inside the blind. Several times he would ask if I thought a hog would sneak in the blind with us.

I had Andrew's back. I was watching from about 40 yards back in a tall ladder stand.

Here are some photos from the day.
